FLAMINGO is a 1968 Robb Yawl sailing out of Long Beach, California.
She is very much loved! I have recored, glassed and teaked the
deck. Installed a new Yanmar engine, prop and shaft. Installed new
bronze ports. Finished numerous interior projects. In short, made
her ready for her next 40 years! She is a labor of love and worth
every minute of effort. |

I own 2 Cheoy Lees. A Robb 35 and a Lion Class Sloop. Both 35
footers designed by Arthur Robb. The Lion I
found in Santa Barbara, Ca. and trucked to Milwaukee. The Robb 35
was bought for a friend of mine in Rhode Island sailed back to
Milwaukee by me 5 years ago and then this year I purchased it
because he had lost interest. I am doing minimal restoration
on the Robb 35 so that I can go sailing this year. The Lion is
where my heart is and she is going to get a complete going over. I
am getting rid of all and any mild steel that is to be found and
replacing it with silicon bronze. Specifically the floors, mast
support and lodging knees etc. There are about 20 frames that need
replacing and every piece of plywood that was installed will be
replaced with LLoyds rated stuff. Including decks, bulkheads,
sub-bulkheads etc. She will be better than new when I am done with
her. Then I will be going globe trotting. |

have owned "China Doll" since 1979. She is a Robb-35 sloop, all
teak, built in 1964. She is not a Lion, which has an 8 ft
beam, but she has a 10 ft. beam and consequently much roomer below.
She was originally commissioned by two Army officers after their
tour of duty in Viet Nam. After watching the construction, they
launched her in Hong Kong harbor and sailed her home. Their is an
article about me and some of my sailing experiences aboard "China
Doll" in the August issue of Sailing magazine (page 57) |

Just to let you know that my Robb 35 Kehhar has been completed and
is now proudly in the water. I have been through a full refit, step
by step and it was great. I manage a shipyard in Trinidad and I do
more and more classics boats. This one was done outside of my yard ,
during my free time. My good friend Dennis Renuart , Owner of China
Doll ( Robb 35 Cheoy Lee) in Miami has been a great help and we had
a lot of fun rebuilding our boats. If anybody needs help to rebuild
a Cheoy Lee please call me or send me an email. Last year I had the
visit of M. Lo But Yang who is the Director and I believe the Owner
of Cheoy Lee in my yard for some business and we spend quite a while
talking about the Robb 35 Kehhar . he remembered very clearly his
father working on this boat . Website

Recently purchased the boat 2004 from
George & Alyce Boulemenous after experiencing its stellar race
performance and stately cruising abilities. Renaming is
imminent but is a long and arduou8s process with them! Current
projects include repair of cockpit bulkheads and varnish, varnish
and more varnish. Oh yes, and sailing her as much as possible!
Being amateur historians, we are
interested in finding out as much of the history of this lovely
vessel. Here's what we know
so far in terms of names the boat has had, owners
and approximate dates:
"Old Teak" was owned by George and Alyce
Voulemenous from 2001 until 2004.
"C Hunt" was owned and restored by John (Jack) Hunt from
about 1995 or 1996
until 2001. "Halcyon" was left in
covered storage for several years at an unknown location.
We have a Coast Guard Examination
certificate stating the boat was owned
by a George Hostetter, who lived in Michigan, dated June of 1977.
We have not been able to contact
George. The builder's plate lists her as
being built for John B. Hopkins in 1963,
yard #909. We suspect she came directly to
Michigan since her apparently
original sail bags are from Boston Yacht Sails, a
local sailmaker.
We would like to find out any information about her early
history, name and places she was
berthed or visited. |

COAST OF MEXICO AND SEA OF CORTEZ
Comments: We purchased the
boat in the fall of 2012. She has been in Barra de Navidad
Mexico for at least 6 years, maybe 10. We are the 4th owners,
and have the documented trail of her from when she was ordered
and shipped to California in 1981. We are continuing her
updating, and plan on using her in Mexico for the foreseeable
future. She is a good boat and in pretty good condition.
When we bought her she had
already had her teak decks removed and all glass decks
installed. She also has an aluminum mast with in-mast furling.
We added a new GPS and 3G radar last year, and are continuing
with cosmetic work and sunbrella dodger and bimini
this year. Plans are that when
the fog moves into the Sacramento CA area in late December we
will head to Barra and the Puerto Vallarta areas of Mexico for a
few months. We post information of our wanderings at the address
below. Dec 2013

9/2019 We bought the Dawn Treader

She is in great ("almost done") condition.
She now has new volvo-penta engine, mast and boom, all new wiring,
windlass, running rigging, instruments, autopilot, radio, AIS,
Iridium GO, radar, stainless fuel tanks, Cap Horn wind vane, teak
decks, sails, reconfigured saloon with new fridge and Wallas stove,
11 new opening portlights (Newfound Metals), retractable bowsprit
and gennaker with sock ... and she is almost free of the old
boat/diesel smell with which she came to us. |

AREA OF SAILING - Auckland NZ
E-Mail Kurt
1/21 Have “come across” your very interesting and well done
Cheoy Lee Owners Association site while looking at Robb 35 pages on
the internet.
I bought “Wild Rose” just under a year ago from the guy who had
sailed her out to NZ from the Caribbean – Panama and while she had
obviously been much loved by previous owners (one apparently for
some 30 years) the effects of age were apparent to decks, brightwork,
spars, etc. She was out of the water for 2 ½ months during our late
Winter period for some professional “TLC” to mast, rigging, hatches,
hull, etc but one major job remains – the teak decking needs to come
off and really a completely new deck as there is water damage to the
plywood base. Nothing new of course for a teak decked wooden boat
but is still quite a big job that must wait until the end of our
current Summer so that I can have her out sailing. |

Originally built for a Mr. John R. McNierney of Honolulu, she was
moved (presumably sailed) from Hawaii to South Africa via Australia
sometime in the late 1970's or the early 1980's.
She has a fiberglass hull with teak on GRP deck. Originally built as
a yawl, but had the mizzen removed some time in the 1980's. The
mizzen mast step still remains, though.
She is the only Robb35's that I have seen with a full-length linear
starboard galley configuration and two quarter berths (as opposed to
the compact galley on the port side of the companionway).
She is a little dated with her original (read: end of life) teak on
the decks, original Volvo Penta MD2B engine (still running
surprisingly well) and all original (or just very old) equipment
(radio, echo sounder, compasses, ships clocks & barometers). While
she requires some TLC and renewing, she seems to be in a good
condition everywhere where it matters.
I am her fourth owner in the 52 years since she was built. Owner #3
kept her for 33 years and I plan on keeping her and sailing her for
at least another 33 years more.
I plan on putting together a coffee table (or dinette) book of her
and the class's history, I would therefore love to get into contact
with anyone that has knowledge of Horizon, has sailed on her, or has
any old photos of her. Anyone who knows something about her unique
interior layout, anyone who knows of Mr. McNierney or his family and
can help me get into contact with them, and anyone that has any more
info than can generally be found on the internet on the class as a
whole would be much appreciated if they can get into contact with
me. |

purchased a lion class named "moondance" from Harry in New Zealand
around 3 years ago. It had been out of the water for 8 years or more
and although some restoration had been done, it wasn't completed. It
had been for sale for more than a year and nobody was interested.
I spent some time making visits to New Zealand getting the yacht in
seaworthy condition, and then sailed it to Australia where I am
doing a full restoration. I changed to Australian Ship's Registry
and was able to have the name Moondance.
The yacht is close to original condition, but an aluminium mast and
a new diesel have been added.
It was built by Cheoy Lee and delivered to the USA. It was then
sailed across the Pacific to New Zealand and then by me to
Australia. I intend to sail the yacht to China as I have a Chinese
partner who sails with me. |

I believe I'm the fourth owner of the boat. She was
raced in the San Francisco area in the mid 1960's under the sail
numbers of J-377, which are on even the
new sails. I have been told by the owner that I bought her from
that she has sailed in two Trans Pac Races (21 days and 19 days). I
have owned her since the mid 1970's. My kids have grown up on that
boat. My daughter (33 years old) and my son (29 years old) still
remember their younger years, growing up on the boat.
The adventures (my God, the stories) in fair and stormy weather.
The "Sanding and Varnishing" parties.......
For, even her hull is Bright. She sails with Tan Bark sails on a
masthead rig. She is listed with "The Register of Wooden Yachts". |

Hi guys, your website is excellent,
but for the sake of accuracy I thought I should let you
know that Siandra is NOT a Cheoy Lee. She is a Lion, built in
Sydney Australia to Robb's original Lion drawings. We're happy to be
included on your website, but perhaps you could clarify that the
boat was not actually a Cheoy Lee. thanks, and keep up the good work
Niki Perryman & Jamie Morrison
Siandra was built by Ron Swanson in
Sydney in 1956, and won both the 1958 and 1960 Sydney-Hobart Races.
She is one of 5 Lion Class yachts built in Australia in the '50s and
'60s. The others are: Kaiyu, Malohi, Simba, and Marguerite II.

I've attached a photo of my fathers 1961 Cheoy Lee Lion that our
family owned from 1961 through 1981. She was the most
beautiful black hull ever to grace the waters of Long Island Sound
with the lovely name Coeur de Lion (French for Lionheart).
Since 1981 she has been painted white and currently resides in Rye,
NY keeping the same name. I have other information such as the
original bill of sale from Lion Yachts, original blueprints, and
photos from Hong Hong of her being built that I will share with your
website. I also own a half-hull model of the boat in exquisite
detail that every Lion owner will drool over-photos to come.
I was 6 when our family purchased the Coeur de Lion and she remained
a member of our family for the next 20 years. When Dad looked
at the first prototype at the New York boat show it was love at
first site but there were concerns, my Mom didn't like the
galley being forward near the hanging locker, the bunks were short,
and the interior space was narrow. We were informed that each
one was custom built and that changes were no problem. The
galley was moved aft, bunks narrowed, Formica added to counters, and
a number of other modifications-all at no additional cost. We
were pleased to notice that our changes were kept in all subsequent
models.
Coeur de Lion has had three subsequent owners and is currently owned
by Paul Hilliard of Rye NY. Although its been 20 years since
she left our family, her memory remains and is constantly in our
thoughts.

I
have just finished a substantial renovation on Shearwater III.
It included a complete interior rehauling and refastening of the
hull planking. When stripping the transom for a new varnish
finish, I discovered that the boat was originally named Liane
_____ ( illegible) and was registered in Hong Kong. The previous
owner had paperwork records of races that Liane ___ had entered
and she had also won a few firsts while participating.
I also have an original plan of the
boat hull that was used for her construction. It is very old and
tattered but still fully legible. I would like to get a copy to
the association for your records, if you wish.
