Greetings and salutations fellow Cheoy Lee enthusiasts,
My name is Robert G. Larkin II, I am the son of James J. Larkin, the original owner of a
Cheoy Lee Offshore 40, the Muritai (Miori for "sea breeze"). In the
late 1960's, I was fortunate enough to be living in Singapore, where a British Air
Marshall by the name of Hughes, interested my father in Cheoy Lee. Air Marshall
Hughes needed a competitor and arranged for an aluminum mast to be delivered from
England, and well the rest is history.
I would be very interested in knowing where the Muritai is now. As time permits, I
will scan more photographs and tell more stories, including pirates and deserted islands
in and around Malaya, Singapore, and Indonesia. Someday I hope to sail back there on a
Choey Lee of my own.
I hope you enjoy the pictures I have attached. The photograph at the dock in Jamacia
Village (Coronado Cays in San Diego, CA) was taken by a very famous photographer, Charlie
Snyder, who includes Marylan Monroe as one of his clients. The photograph at Choey Lee
Shipyard is circa 1967. We accepted delivery in late 1967 and had her officially
documented in 1968.
My father and mother still live in Coronado Cays. They sold the Muritai in 1981. We last
heard rumor she was berthed in Sausilito, Cali fornia. I keep looking for her as I play in
my 20 ft. roundabout, but have not seen her since then. At any rate, enjoy the
photos.
Robert G. Larkin II
PS. My father is still coherent but lacks the ability to communicate due to a series
of strokes. My mother will be happy to talk with you. |
